In Cameroon, braiding doesn't happen in a salon but between the knees of the elders. For hours. With stories, songs and plenty of patience.

Left over the middle, right over the middle – close along the scalp. The craft is simple to describe and takes years to master.

A hairstyle was a language.

Patterns showed where you came from, whether you were married or celebrating a feast. I keep braiding this language.

Why I braid

I didn't learn braiding at a school, but from my mother and my aunts in Cameroon. To me, a hairstyle is not a service. It is a piece of home that you carry with you.

Called “nattes collées” in Cameroon. Close to the scalp, straight or in patterns, feed-in on request.

A small glossary

What you should know about braiding.

Nattes colléesCameroon · Cornrows

That's what cornrows are called in French-speaking Cameroon: “glued braids”. Girls often learn them at six or seven, on their sisters' heads.

Fulani BraidsWest Africa · Fulani

The Fulani are a pastoral people living in many West African countries, including northern Cameroon. Typical are a centre braid, side braids and jewellery made of beads, cowrie shells or silver.

Cowrie shellsJewellery with a history

For centuries, cowrie shells were used as currency in parts of Africa. Worn in the hair, they still stand for prosperity and fertility.

Protective stylesWhy braiding helps your hair

Braided hair is combed, brushed and blow-dried less. That protects it from breakage. What matters is not braiding too tight – I pay attention to that with every braid.

Knotless instead of knotsModern technique

With knotless braids, the extension hair is fed in gradually instead of being knotted at the root. The result: less weight, less tension, a flat root.

About me

From Cameroon to Reutlingen.

“Your hair tells stories. I braid them beautifully.”

I'm Carène Laure and I grew up in Cameroon. At home we braided at weekends, in the courtyard, with the whole family. That's how I learned – long before it became my profession.

In Reutlingen, I combine this craft with modern techniques such as knotless braids. I take my time, never braid too tight and tell you honestly what is good for your hair.

Questions

Good to know.

How long do braids last?

Cornrows 2–4 weeks, knotless and box braids 6–8 weeks. Don't wear them longer, so your hair doesn't mat at the roots.

Does braiding hurt?

It shouldn't hurt. If it pulls, tell me straight away. Braids that are too tight harm the scalp – that's not a sign of quality.

Does it work with straight or fine hair?

Yes, in many cases. We'll talk beforehand about which styles will hold well in your hair.

How do I care for my braids?

Sleep in a satin bonnet, care for your scalp with a light oil and wash gently every one to two weeks. I'll give you all the tips after your appointment.

Can I bring my child?

Of course. I plan breaks for children. Best bring snacks and a tablet or book.
